What is Cambridge IGCSE?

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the qualification is a globally recognised one for students 16 years or more.  Students at AIS can take up to 5 subjects which are embedded in Year 10 with the Australian Curriculum so students can study English, Maths, a language, Global Perspectives, and Science all at IGCSE.  At the end of year 10, the students can continue with SACE or opt to take AS and A-levels.  An IGCSE with an A-C pass equates to 20 SACE credits in that subject.

Why A-Levels at AIS?

Students at AIS study A-levels over 2 years.  Only 3 A-levels are taken in any 3 subjects allowing students to really specialise in their interests and maximise their well-being.

A1 takes place in Year 11 where students choose 3 subjects and take exams in each subject at the end to attain an AS-level. (AS levels equate to half an A-level)

A2 allows students to continue with the same subjects at A-level and sit the final papers at the end of Y12 to acquire the full A-level.

In A2 some students might choose to switch to a different subject and take it at AS-level. 2 AS-levels in two different subjects count as an A-level.  At AIS all students study AS-level in Global Perspectives at Y11 as global citizenship sits at the heart of our school.

The Cambridge A-level pathway is examination-based, meaning that students study fewer subjects than students doing SACE or IB. There is little or no coursework meaning that students have fewer assignments and more time to study or enjoy co-curricular or out-of-school interests.

The A-level pathway is suitable for students who perform well in examinations. Our AIS staff are skilled in directing you.
